Clinical Laboratory Professionals play an important part in the delivery of efficient and collaborative healthcare.

We want to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of all laboratory professionals, and provide some insight into the high demand for these professionals.

Laboratory Professionals is at an all time high. Here are a few of the contributing factors:

1. U.S. programs preparing tomorrow’s laboratory workforce, train only about half of what is needed

(The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage)[1].

This raises questions about whether America’s medical laboratories have the personnel needed to handle today’s and tomorrow’s demand for medical laboratory testing services (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage) [1].

2. Fewer than 4,000 individuals are graduating each year from accredited training programs (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage)[1].

We are graduating 30 percent fewer laboratory professionals than 10 years ago and 56 percent fewer laboratory professionals than 20 years ago (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage)[1].

3. According to the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), the number of accredited clinical laboratory technology programs has             steadily declined (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage) [1].

The reduction in the number of training programs is problematic in both rural and urban areas. In rural areas aspiring medical laboratory professionals struggle to find training programs close to their homes.[1] To make matters worse, Los Angles and Miami do not have any training programs (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage) [1].

4. An Aging Workforce (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage) [1].

The average age of the laboratory workforce, 43.7, has been increasing steadily over the past few years and is aging at 78 percent faster rate than the entire U.S. labor market (The Medical Laboratory Personnel Shortage) [1].
